Immediate Possession: Samuel Farrier

Sofia Sominski Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by New York–based artist Samuel Farrier at the gallery. The exhibition introduces a new body of work developed from intimate observations of his Centre Street studio and the ambient conditions that surround it.

The studio appears not as a subject but as a structure, a place of work, but also of being. Farrier draws from the abundance of what is overlooked: breath, habitual routine, burnt coffee, encounters, and gazing out the windows. These observations become the basis for works that move between the familiar and the out of place. His works give form to experiences we recognize instinctively but rarely articulate.

Throughout the exhibition, Farrier constructs situations that evoke the logic of a film set without enforcing a singular narrative. The viewer encounters traces and atmospheres that feel intimately known without being entirely identifiable. Farrier’s objects, images, gestures, and spatial arrangements belong to a larger structure, while the event to which they refer remains live.

Farrier’s practice has an expansive visual and associative horizon, moving horizontally between reference, material, image, and form. Rather than narrowing toward an established language, the work explores how attention and open association become a multisensory language.

The exhibition creates a persistent sensation of recognition, presenting an environment for something we already know through living it.
